I am from Cranston, RI, and a graduate of Cranston High School West. I am a second year graduate student in the Masters Program, working towards my Teaching Certificate. I did my undergraduate work at URI as well, and majored in Biological Sciences and minored in Mathematics. I hope to teach biology and general science in secondary education. Outside of school, I love playing trivia with my friends, and enjoy low-key activities, like painting and doing puzzles. When I'm feeling active, I love playing tennis and wiffle ball.
Unit Plan: Heredity
Overview of unit: The purpose of this unit is for students to find out how traits are passed from parent to offspring, determine the probability of those inherited traits, and what types of genetic diseases can occur, and how they occur. Students will have just learned mitosis and meiosis, which will aide in their understanding of the genetics concepts. The focus of this unit will be on chapter 26: Inheritance of Traits. Students will learn the material through notes, lab experiments, activities, and in-class workshops. This biology class is a lower level course, so having the different types of instruction and assessments will help all students learn. Because of the block schedule, students will have plenty of time within the period to learn the concepts and do activities to reinforce the information.
